The Kalasasaya ( Aymara : kala = stone; saya or sayasta = standing), the "place of standing stones", is the central place of the ancient ruins of Tiahuanaco in Bolivia .

The Kalasasaya (also: Kalasaya ) has an elevated main square in a rectangular shape, which has a length of 129 meters and a width of 118 meters, is framed by upright monoliths and is oriented towards the four cardinal points. To the east of the main square is a semi-underground temple, from which a staircase with a gate leads up. On the day of the equinox , the sun rises in the center of this gate. Scientists therefore view the Kalasasaya as a solar observatory from the pre-Inca period .

The exact period of origin of the Kalasasaya is the subject of scientific speculation. While Arthur Posnansky’s research suggests an age of 12,000 years, radio-carbon measurements suggest an age of 2000 years.
