Design and history

On September 27, 2002, a board of trustees was founded to build a monument to Oskars Kalpaks, who became known as an officer in the struggle for Latvian independence in 1918/19. Donations were collected from Latvians at home and abroad. In a design competition, the design by the sculptor Gļebs Panteļejevs and the architect Andris Veidemanis won out of 18 submissions . Jānis Reinbergs was involved in the construction as a graphic designer, Viesturs Staņislavskis as a designer and Ēriks Zīverts as a civil engineer . The monument was inaugurated on June 22, 2006.

The expressive work consists of a 4.60 meter wide and 8.10 meter long curved base made of black granite as well as a pyramid made of stainless steel , on which the portrait of Kalpak is engraved. The monument reaches a total height of 3.20 meters.

On the pedestal is the inscription in Latvian on the left side:

Pulkvedim
OSKARAM KALPAKAM
Latvijas armijas pirmajam komandierim

( German : Colonel / Oskars Kalpaks / First Commander of the Latvian Army )

On the right is a quote from the Latvian poet Anšlavs Eglītis :

KO VARU VĒL TEV, TĒVZEME,
PAR SIRDI VAIRĀK DOT… A. Eglītis
