Cold infeed system

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A cold injection system (abbreviated as KAS ), also known as PTV injector (programmed temperature vaporising injector), is a component of a gas chromatograph .

Working methods

The principle developed by Wolfgang Vogt and colleagues in the 1970s enables temperature-labile substances to be introduced into the chromatographic system. The injector itself can be cooled (mostly with liquid nitrogen ) and heated up with temperature programs after the injection. Cold infeed systems can also be used to mask out the solvent and thus enable larger injection quantities (LVI) in gas chromatography. Another possible application is the freezing out of volatile substances from a continuous gas flow when analyzing gaseous samples.

If it is only about a splitless and gentle sample application, on-column injectors offer a cheaper option.
