Cold air accumulation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cold air accumulation refers to a disruption of the fresh air supply in a built-up basin. Due to the daily temperature fluctuation as well as different buildings and topography , air currents change between different areas. In particular, cold, heavier air from higher areas falls into built-up valley basins at night in summer . This air is required to supply fresh air to the valley. The air flow often takes place in thin layers (only a few meters high).

If this air flow is interrupted by construction measures, this has an impact on the microclimate , as a result of which a cold air accumulation arises. Typical interventions in cold air flows are large or high commercial buildings and embankments for traffic routes. In the course of planning, such air currents must be taken into account.

solutions

To reduce the effects, the following are conceivable:

  • changed arrangement of the buildings
  • changed routing of the traffic route
  • Elevation of the traffic route and clearance of sufficient cross-sections for the flowing air through bridges
  • Exposing alternative paths for air currents through landscaping measures (removing forests / meadows / ponds)
