The Kalvarienberg in Bergheim (Rhein-Erft-Kreis) is a replica of the crucifixion group made of light gray sandstone. The sacred work of art shows Christ crucified, flanked by his mother Mary and the evangelist John. It is located in the middle of the pedestrian zone in the district town of Bergheim.

History and architecture

The ensemble of figures rests on an altar-like base made of red sandstone. The calvary has a height of six meters. There is an extensive inscription on the base with the following wording:

“See where I've come, what pain I'm wearing. I died of you and go there, hear what last complaint. See the wounds that I receive yours. See the nails on which I hung on the Creutz in front of you. And although there are great pains that I have felt, this is my greatest pain from all stings and wounds that I gave up all my blood. In the hour of death the pain has received such bad thanks that it hurts me from the heart. - Christianus Litz, court sculptor from Churpfälz fecit ANNO 1728. "

So she names Christian Litz from Düsseldorf, court sculptor from the Electoral Palatinate, as a sculptor . At the foot of the cross trunk is the alliance coat of arms of the married couple Johann Josef Peter Sourdt and Isabella Katharina Hartmans. The Calvary was built on their instructions in 1728. Many sacred buildings and sculptures were destroyed or damaged during the French occupation of the Rhineland. The crucifixion group was also affected. It was damaged in 1798 at the instigation of the French authorities, but was restored at the beginning of the 19th century.

Since the work of art was soon damaged due to the weather, Pastor Karl Unkelbach (1867–1886) collected donations from the population and had a new group of sculptures created. It is not known whether it is an exact reproduction of the original. The crucifixion group underwent a thorough renovation twice, in the years 1961 to 1965 and in the early 1980s. Because of the ongoing damage from the weather, a true-to-life copy was finally set up on the Erft in 1983. The original found its place in 1986 in the parish church of St. Remigius.
