Kataginu and Hakama

Kamishimo ( Japanese ) is a traditional two-piece clothing for men that was mainly worn during the Edo period . Usually the same fabric was used for kataginu (a wing-like vest that emphasizes the chest and shoulders) and hakama . It is worn over the Kosode (a short-sleeved kimono ). Kamishimo was made from various materials, including paper textiles .

Originally, the Kamishimo was a ceremonial dress worn by samurai without official status, but the style was later copied by Chōnin of high social standing. Today the Kamishimo is mainly worn at traditional performances and religious festivals.
