Chambermaid

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chambermaid ( French: Femme de chambre ) is the outdated designation of a personal servant of a high-ranking lady, for example a princess . Chamberlains were also referred to as state maidens or state maidens.

At princely courts, chambermaids were located in the hierarchy below the court ladies , but above the maidservants . They were often widowed and, as the most intimate of the female court , had to be available at night.
