Rhineland-Palatinate

conditions

Only wine products that have been produced by natural and legal persons in Rhineland-Palatinate are eligible to participate. There must also be an official inspection number and a certain minimum stock of bottles. In addition, a year label must be attached (does not apply to quality sparkling wines). Bottle sizes from 0.375 liters to 1.5 liters are permitted.

The state award organized by the Rhineland-Palatinate Chamber of Agriculture is the largest regional competition of its kind in Germany. In the award year 2005/2006, 1,878 companies with 17,882 wines and 505 sects took part, for the 2008 vintage 11,656 wines were awarded. The competition is not commercial; it wants to reward quality efforts, give incentives for constant quality improvement and provide guidance to quality-conscious consumers.

The criteria according to which the expert committee submits its assessment at six award dates per year after a hidden sample are defined in the award regulations. On this basis, points between 0 and 5 are awarded for a tasted wine. The points awarded by all examiners are added up and the total divided by the number of examiners. In order to achieve a Golden Chamber Prize Coin, an applicant must achieve between 4.5 and 5.0 points.

Judges

The Rhineland-Palatinate Chamber of Agriculture appoints a jury from the examination commissions for quality tests as well as from other circles of the Rhineland-Palatinate wine industry. An appointment as a judge is possible up to the age of 70. During the quality assessment, each sample is presented to the jury covertly. Points can then be awarded for specified test features, which are then combined into an overall result in a calculation process.

Awards

Golden, silver and bronze chamber prize coins are awarded.

In addition, honorary prizes (from various donors - cities, districts, associations) and state prizes as well as great state prizes of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate can be awarded. In order to qualify for this, companies must continuously demonstrate top quality over a longer period of time by successfully participating in the state awards. The criteria are defined in the award regulations of the Chamber of Agriculture.

Chamber prize coin winners receive award labels that are usually attached to the neck of the bottle and are therefore clearly visible to the consumer.

After the award year (August to July) the Chamber of Agriculture invites you to a competition of the best. To this end, around 25 new categories are defined every year, which were particularly typical to formative for the respective vintage in the respective growing area. Within these categories, only wines that were awarded a Golden Chamber Prize Coin in the previous award year and of which the producer still has a significant supply can apply for the title of Winner of the Year. The evaluation takes place after a blank sample in several elimination rounds according to the evaluation scheme of the award regulations. However, in addition to the usual experts, the jury also includes consumers, restaurateurs and specialist journalists. The winning wines are considered to be the leading wine in their respective category, on which winemakers and consumers can orient themselves. The award ceremony takes place every year in October and marks the climax of the state awards.
