The Kamenjak (also Rt Kamenjak or Donji Kamenjak ) is the southern tip of the peninsula Istria . As a protected natural landscape, it is protected by law. There are eleven official nature parks in addition to eight national parks in Croatia (see list of national parks and nature parks in Croatia ).

The fishing village of Premantura can be found on the cape, before the access to the former nature park .

Flora and fauna

A unique flora and fauna has been preserved on Cape Kamenjak. In particular, the peninsula is home to over 550 different plant species, five of which have their only habitat in Croatia on Cape Kamenjak. The numerous orchid species are a special botanical attraction . More than 23 different protected species can be found on Kamenjak. The cape is also available for human use: livestock, olive growing and beach operations. In terms of protection status, it can be compared with the landscape protection area known in the German-speaking area .

As a result of the migration of many farmers, unused areas were covered with bushes. This threatened the displacement of rare orchid species. In order to preserve pasture areas, pasture management is now being promoted by the Kamenjak regional administration. The pastures offer a high level of biodiversity. In the vicinity of the Polje bay you can visit a traditional farm where autochthonous Istrian cattle are kept for grazing.

Driveway

Some approaches, including to bays within the cape, have been closed to cars for several years. Part of this restricted area was hit by a bush fire in summer 2004 and partially destroyed. The unlocked driveways can be used for a fee.

free time activities

Sports enthusiasts have many options: almost the entire peninsula can be hiked on a path along the coast. The slightly hilly terrain is also ideal for cyclists or joggers. The many bays are popular bathing areas and cliff diving is possible from the sometimes steep rocky banks . The jump height from the cliffs is 3 to 13 meters. Often rumored jumping heights of up to 20 meters cannot be found at Cape Kamenjak.
