Capsulotomy (neurosurgery)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The capsulotomy is a neurosurgical procedure, which is used in patients with severe and chronic course, primarily of obsessive-compulsive disorder or depressive disorders when behavioral and pharmacological treatment options have been exhausted. Studies assume a maximum success rate of over 60% for bilateral anterior capsulotomy in obsessive-compulsive disorders. Since the capsulotomy leads to an irreversible brain lesion with a severe side effect profile, there are attempts to replace it with the less invasive and potentially reversible deep brain stimulation .
