The Karl comic series is about events in the Rheingau that are regularly related to the wine growing there . The work of the illustrator Michael Apitz and the authors Eberhard Kunkel and Patrick Kunkel tells the stories of their comic character Karl.

The volumes have been reissued by Finix Comics since 2017 . If the volumes were previously published in softcover, the comic association publishes the albums in a complete hardcover edition. In each volume of the complete edition, three adventures are summarized. With the publication of the fourth volume of the complete edition, all volumes will be available again. The complete edition is upgraded with editorial content that deals with the series and its creators.

The first volume explains the nickname of the main character Karl . The story of the discovery of the late harvest is taken up . The brave Karl was sent in 1775 to obtain permission from the Bishop of Fulda to harvest grapes in the Johannisberg monastery in Rheingau . On the way, however, his enraged competitor Ferdinand lies in wait for him . When he finally arrives on the Johannisberg, the harvest has already gone into rot . With the help of his friend Oskar and his dog Grandpatte, he still presses the grapes and discovers the late harvest.

The stories all revolve around historical events and peculiarities of the Rheingau and wine. The adventures lead, for example, Karl and Oskar on the trail of Goethe's Italian trip to Italy, to the coronation of the emperor in Frankfurt or as far as Paris. The French always play a major role, as the Rheingau was at times occupied by French revolutionary troops.

Publications

Some of the comics are also available in English, Japanese and French. In the meantime, eight detective novels by Eberhard Kunkel with Karl as the protagonist have also been published.
