Karneades the Younger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karneades the Younger ( Greek  Καρνεάδης Karneádēs ) never existed.

Until 2019, based on incorrect reconstructions in a papyrus, it was assumed that the successor of Carnead of Cyrene had been the scholarch of the Academy from 137/136 BC. Was a namesake, son of a polemarchus. However, new readings in the Index Academicorum of Philodemos of Gadara show without a doubt that a certain Polemarchus of Nicomedia succeeded Carnead of Cyrene. As consequently a younger Carneades did not exist, the term Carneades the Elder for Carneades of Cyrene is obsolete.
