documenta 14: The Parthenon of Books by Night

The world's largest directory of censored and banned books is known as the Kassel List . It lists around 120,000 titles from all times and countries that were or are on an index. The directory went online on May 1, 2019.

The aim of the project is "to document global censorship and to defend freedom of expression", says the literary scholar Nikola Roßbach from the University of Kassel .

history

The project arose from the " Parthenon of Books" by the Argentine artist Marta Minujin . She had a temple replica built from 67,000 books at documenta 14 to set an example against censorship. Germanists at the University of Kassel had started the directory in advance to support this work of art. For validation, they used a list drawn up by the team around literary scholar Nikola Roßbach from the University of Kassel and visiting professor Florian Gassner from the University of British Columbia , Vancouver. This list has been available since May 1, 2019.

Topicality

The list of banned books is not complete: censored books, whether from earlier times or current cases, can be reported on the website. According to the initiators, verifiable evidence is essential. Numerous currently banned titles make the list, according to Nikola Roßbach, a "highly topical, virtual memorial against censorship and lack of freedom". The aim is to document global censorship and to defend freedom of expression.
