A double box girder bridge

Box girder bridges are beam bridges whose girders are reinforced by a box-shaped construction. The typical designs consist of prestressed or reinforced concrete . The bridge elements are particularly torsion-resistant and suitable for medium spans.

The Deutzer Bridge in Cologne designed by Fritz Leonhardt was the world's first steel box girder bridge (1948). The twin bridge, which was added to the south in 1980, was constructed with the same profile in prestressed concrete. The world's largest spanned box girder bridge is the Zoobrücke , also in Cologne.
