The disaster control of the Deutsche Bundespost should ensure an adequate supply of postal and telecommunications services , in particular to maintain state and government authority, to supply the population, economy and administration as well as to support the armed forces in the event of a crisis or disaster.

The German Federal Post Office was as carriers of the telecommunications authority in the State civil protection integrated system in the Federal Republic. The so-called "self-protection" of the Deutsche Bundespost is still active today at the successor companies (Deutsche Post and Deutsche Telekom). Today's meaning

After the privatization of the Deutsche Bundespost and the opening of the markets for private companies, the company's importance for supplying citizens with postal and telecommunications services in times of crisis has also decreased. In addition to other postal and telecommunications service providers , other communication channels such as e-mail, mobile communications or the Internet are also available today. Nonetheless, in 1994 the law for securing the postal system and telecommunications (PTSG ) created the legal framework for securing telecommunications and postal services for the successor companies and new providers .
