Disaster theory

The word catastrophe theory denotes:

  • in biology the cataclysmic theory of Georges Cuvier (1769-1832), which explained fossil finds without assuming a development in the sense of evolution, and which is experiencing a renaissance today on a new basis
  • in mathematics the theory of discontinuous, discontinuous processes, see catastrophe theory (mathematics)
  • in sociology the theories of appalling social processes, see disaster sociology
  • several theories, some of which are highly controversial, on the origins of the solar system, the earth and life, see catastrophism
