history

Emperor Heinrich VI. gave the monastery to be built as part of the Dortmund royal court a royal camp which at that time was still outside the city walls of Dortmund. However, it was not built until a few years later in the first quarter of the 13th century. Now the monastery was located within the city walls, which had since been expanded. The church consecration took place in 1215 by Bishop Dietrich of Estonia . The facility was the oldest monastery in Dortmund.

At first it was a nunnery that followed the Benedictine rule. But around 1218/24 the convent passed to the Premonstratensian women. The parish Kirchlinde near Dortmund was incorporated into the monastery . The monastery has received numerous donations over the centuries. It was under the supervision of the Abbot von Knechtsteden . Although the imperial city of Dortmund had become Protestant in the course of the Reformation , St. Katharina was able to assert herself under imperial protection. In 1737 15 women choirs and 10 lay sisters lived there. It was repealed in 1803/04.

In 1864 a brewery was built on the monastery grounds and the monastery buildings were subsequently demolished. The former house of the prior from the 18th century served as the "House of Art." The building was destroyed in 1944. After 1945 the remains of the monastery were also removed.
