Holy Trinity Cathedral in Hajnówka

The Holy Trinity Cathedral is a place of worship of the Polish Orthodox Church in Hajnówka ( Podlaskie Voivodeship ).

The building was erected in 1981–1983 based on a design by the Poznan architect Aleksander Grigorowicz. It belongs to the Hajnówka deanery of the Warsaw-Bielsk diocese. The shell construction started around 1978. Voluntary young people from the GDR helped with the construction as part of the Action atonement .

The iconostasis and some icons were created by the Greek painter Dimitrios Andonopulas, the rest of the icons are the works of Russian and Bulgarian icon painters.

The church offers space for 5,000 visitors on two floors. It is one of the most interesting buildings of this type in Poland. The curved vaults were formed from thin-walled reinforced concrete shells. The architecture does not contain any literal quotations from the world of forms of the Russian Orthodox tradition, but the atmosphere remains traditional.

Thanks to the excellent acoustics, the church has held festivals of Orthodox church music since 1983.
