State-certified commercial assistant or state-certified commercial assistant (short: commercial assistant or KA) are the official names for state-recognized training occupations in Germany . Based on the framework agreements of the KMK Standing Conference , there are regulations of the federal states for obtaining a professional qualification under state law.

Commercial assistants support the management in their diverse commercial tasks and in communication with national and international business partners . The concepts for this apprenticeship were created around 1981, but were not always listed under this name in the beginning. The background to the creation of this apprenticeship is the new demands on companies in the global market.

The training to become a commercial assistant is viewed as initial professional training . The vocational training as a commercial assistant imparts knowledge on the specialist areas of business , languages and data processing . The commercial assistant training course is a school-based training program at vocational schools that is regulated by state law . Depending on the federal state, the training is also offered under the designation business assistant with a corresponding addition.

The prerequisite for this full-time school-based commercial training is a completed middle school leaving certificate or a qualification recognized as equivalent. The training period is two years. If the advanced technical college entrance qualification is part of the training, the duration is three years. These specifications of the KMK were implemented differently in the federal states. In Bavaria only a two-year apprenticeship is offered - the technical diploma must then be acquired in one year at the vocational high school. In North Rhine-Westphalia there is a two-year training course only for those entitled to university entrance. Candidates with an intermediate school leaving certificate attend the three-year vocational school up to a vocational qualification with a technical diploma.

The training consists of interdisciplinary learning fields that are based on professional fields of action. Interdisciplinary learning fields make it easier to learn professional skills. Using the computer at the workplace and the intranet or internet makes it possible to promote holistic work processes and more teamwork. During the apprenticeship, an internship of at least eight weeks is foreseen, which must be completed within the school year. Many training schools require a significantly longer internship in order to ensure that theory and practice are interlinked.

In the training, attention is also paid to promoting creativity. By deviating from the standard specifications, the trainees should be encouraged to discover and try out new possibilities. This includes independent planning, implementation and control of operational business processes. All of this is aimed at preparing for the professional world. A special focus in some federal states is the learning office, which is a connection to the workplace. The aim of the training is to teach the students business thinking in the areas of application and income. The commercial assistants learn how to work at management levels where decisions are made and expected independently.
