Kiihtelysvaara [ ˈkiːhtɛlysˌʋɑːrɑ ] is a place and a former municipality in the North Karelia countryside in eastern Finland . Administratively, Kiihtelysvaara has belonged to the city of Joensuu since 2005 , before it had formed its own municipality.

The church village Kiihtelysvaara is located in the rural east of the very extensive urban area of Joensuu in the middle of the Karelian hill country ( Vaara Karjala ) almost 30 kilometers southeast of the city center. The municipality of Kiihtelysvaara comprised the main town and an area of 530 km² with the villages of Heinävaara, Huhtilampi, Keskijärvi, Oskola, Palo, Röksä and Uskaljärvi. Most recently it had almost 2,700 inhabitants.

The name Kiihtelysvaara is made up of the words kiihtelys , an old unit of measurement for 40 squirrel skins (which used to be the currency in Finland), and vaara for the hills typical of North Karelia. The coat of arms of the former municipality refers to the name Kiihtelysvaara and shows four silver squirrel skins in the black field. Originally Kiihtelysvaara was a chapel parish of the Tohmajärvi parish . In 1857 Kiihtelysvaara became independent as a separate community. Until 1925 Pyhäselkä was also part of Kiihtelysvaara. At the beginning of 2005, Kiihtelysvaara was incorporated into the city of Joensuu together with the neighboring municipality of Tuupovaara .

The wooden church of Kiihtelysvaara was built in 1770. It burned down in 2018, probably as a result of arson.
