Kilbeggan Abbey (Benedicto Dei) is a former Cistercian abbey in County Westmeath in what is now the Republic of Ireland . The former monastery was in the city of Kilbeggan .
history
The monastery was probably founded in 1150 on a foundation of the MacCoghlan family on the site of an existing Irish monastery founded by St. Beccan in the 5th or 6th century as a subsidiary of Mellifont Abbey and thus belonged to the affiliation of the Clairvaux Monastery Abbey . In 1217 the abbey was involved in the dispute of Jerpoint ("riot of Jerpoint") and then in the conspiracy of Mellifont ("conspiracy of Mellifont"), at the end of which it was placed under Buildwas Abbey . When the monastery was dissolved in 1539, it was one of the poorest in Ireland. The Lambert family then received his goods. In the 18th century, a Protestant church was built on the ruins of the monastery, which also fell into ruins.
Buildings and plant
There are no visible remains of the monastery.
