Kilwa is an island in Lake Mweru in the province of Luapula in Zambia and is located about seven kilometers from the city of Kilwa on the lakefront of the Democratic Republic of the Congo . The border runs between Kilwa Island and Kilwa City. About 20,000 people live on the island.

Kilwa is a triangular fishing island eight kilometers long and 25 square kilometers in area. It has largely flat banks. Their highest points are a hundred meters above lake level. Three chains of hills run through the island and end abruptly with 76 meter high cliffs on the water in the south and north-west. Their climate is cool and dry. Kilwa is regularly called by ferry from Nchelenge .
