Kilwa is a 918 m high town on the west bank of Lake Mweru in the province of Haut-Katanga in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo , near which copper and silver deposits are mined. A few kilometers from Kilwa lies the island of the same name in Lake Mweru, which already belongs to Zambia .

Kilwa is a fishing village like all settlements around Lake Mweru. It is almost isolated and can only be reached via the lake. 25 km further north (straight line or 50 km drive) is the Dikulushi open pit mine, which has been extracting 20,000 t of copper and 1.7 million ounces of silver annually since 2001. The mining products are shipped from Kilwa with a 48 by 10 m barge to Nchelenge in nearby Zambia and from there transported directly to South Africa , where there is a continuous connection on asphalt roads.

Kilwa has a 1,500 m long runway.

Since 1977 Kilwa has also been the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Kilwa-Kasenga .

Refugee situation

In 2006 there were still very many refugees from the country's civil war zones living in Kilwa. The food situation is pathetic. The so-called Kilwa massacre of the 62nd Brigade of the 6th Military Region in October 2004, which, according to UN data, killed over 100 civilians, is directly related to the unrest among the refugees over copper exports. Since Kilwa is almost inaccessible by land, the mining company either flew the soldiers in or took them to Kilwa in mining vehicles. There they brutally restored order and shot anyone who appeared to be suspicious to them.

The refugees in Kilwa are almost forgotten at the moment. Only a few aid organizations take care of them and Zambia is now monitoring its borders more closely. But the fish market in Kilwa cannot be less important than the one in Nchelenge or Kashikishi .
