history

The simple central baroque building was built from 1724 to 1731 at the monastery and hospital of the Elisabethen nuns ( Klášter a špitál P. Marie u Alžbětinek ) according to designs by Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer after Kaspar von Questenberg , abbot of the Strahov monastery , founded the Elisabethenstift.

The St. Thekla Chapel was added to the north of the church by an unknown architect between 1760 and 1762; the wall paintings there were by Josef Kracke (1762). The St. Barbara chapel from 1767 stands in the monastery garden. Above the church portal there are two stone coats of arms of the founder Margarete Valdštejn-Černín . The interior of the church is richly decorated with carvings. The main altar shows a picture of the Sorrowful Virgin Mary ( Pietà ) by Siard Nosecký .

Between 1930 and 1938 the church was modernized. Today the church is in the care of the Elisabethinerinnen. In winter it has served the German-speaking Catholic community in Prague as a church for Sunday mass, as it can be heated. The church is open to tourists during services.
