The plan of the church

The Church of Svenneby is a Romanesque church building in the town of Tanum , in the Swedish province of Bohuslän . The church belongs to the Socken (Swedish parish) Svenneby.

The building is one of the oldest churches in Bohuslän. It was built at the beginning of the 12th century. Originally it was in the middle of the village. Today it is outside the church. The bell in the free-standing bell tower , which is located on a neighboring rock, dates from the 13th century. The southern choir entrance is still in its original state, while the gallery , for example, was only built in the 18th century. There are four medieval sculptures in the church . The ceiling paintings were created by J. Alstedt in 1741. The Altar image with a representation of the Supper is from 1741. The font is made of a soapstone been worked out; he probably comes from Norway . Around the church is the parish cemetery.

The last service was celebrated in the church on December 5, 1915. Then the congregation moved to the new church. The old church is sheltered by a cliff that is slightly higher than the church itself.
