Grip length

Clamp lengths for rivet and screw connections

In technical mechanics, the clamp length is the thickness of the elements to be connected, including any washers that may be used . In the case of screw connections, this is the distance between the screw support surface and the nut or threaded hole, and in the case of riveted connections, the distance between the support surfaces of the rivet heads.

Variant of definition

The above definition is used in the standards DIN EN 14399-4 High-strength, pre-tensionable sets for screw connections in metal construction - Part 4: System HV - sets made of hexagon bolts and nuts and DIN EN 14399-8 High-strength, planned, pre-tensioned screw connections for metal construction - Part 8: System HV - sets made of hexagon fitting bolts and nuts are used. Deviating from this, the DIN 7990 hexagon bolts with hexagon nuts for steel structures and DIN 7968 hexagon fitting screws with hexagon nuts for steel structures define the clamping length as the thickness of the parts to be connected without washers.

Purpose of definition

Minimum clamping lengths depending on the screw or rivet size are specified in order to guarantee secure screwing and riveting or the required assembly preload . In the normative regulations for the respective screws or rivets, the still permissible grip lengths are therefore specified as minimum values.
