Latch (machine part)

The pawl is a machine part that is a one-armed, more rarely two-armed, short lever rotatably mounted around a pin , which then serves to inhibit the movement of another machine part ( pawl , drop pawl) or, as with the pawl control on steam engines , cause the movement or relocation of a machine part.

Latches can e.g. B. Inhibit ratchet wheels so that you can turn the wheel in one direction, but not in the other direction. In machine tools , the pawl often serves as a pushing element by rotating a wheel in periodic motion.
