Kronobäck monastery ruins

Kronobäck Monastery, which has only survived as a ruin, was located in the Swedish municipality of Mönsterås in the province of Kalmar län .

It was first mentioned as a hospital for lepers in 1292. At a meeting in Södertälje in 1479, Sten Sture and the Imperial Council decided to convert the hospital into a monastery of the Order of St. John . In a letter dated July 26, 1480, the monastery was granted all the privileges and property of the hospital, but the residents of the surrounding Harde had to be looked after and medically cared for.

King Gustav Wasa confiscated all of the monastery property in 1529 and then dissolved it. However, the hospital area should continue to exist. The monastery fell apart over time. The ruins were only excavated in the 1940s and can be viewed today.
