The Cistercian monastery Nossa Senhora do Desterro was under Philip III. founded by Portugal in Lisbon in 1591 and dissolved with the other Portuguese monasteries in 1834. In the following period it became a hospital (Hospital do Desterro). In 2007 the plant was sold.

The original building was started in 1591 according to plans by Filipe Terzio. The facility was partially destroyed in the 1755 earthquake . The church (Nossa Senhora do Desterro), a two-room church parallel to the street on Rua Nova do Desterro, was completely rebuilt in the 19th century.
