The Monastery of St. Stephen was a convent of Benedictine nuns in Zeitz in today's Saxony-Anhalt from the 12th to the 16th century.

The monastery was first located at St. Stephen's Church in front of the medieval city. Around 1446 it was relocated to the Michaeliskirche in the upper town, to which the convent buildings were added to the north.

history

The monastery was first mentioned in 1147. In 1154 he was given patronage over the Michaeliskirche. Between 1185 and 1192 there were also Augustinian canons at St. Stephen's Church.

During the Saxon Fratricidal War from 1446 the monastery was relocated to the St. Michaeliskirche in the city for security. In 1517 the cloister building was extended and a separate chapel was added to the northwest of the church.

In 1537, the first evangelical preaching took place in St. In 1541 the monastery was closed, the Michaeliskirche remained a Protestant parish church.
