Seirkieran Monastery
The monastery of Seirkieran (also Saighir , Seir Kieran , Irish Saighir Chiaráin ), east of Birr in County Offaly in Ireland is said to have been founded by Ciarán the elder . It was sacked by Vikings in 842 . The local bishopric was later moved first to Aghaboe in County Laois and in 1052 to Kilkenny .
The current church of the monastery founded by the Augustinians in 1170 is probably partly built over an older one. There is a small cross and an old tombstone by the church. The remainder of a round tower and an ornate high cross base are also present. The cemetery lies in an area of around 4 hectares, which is surrounded by traces of an enclosure with an outer ditch.
