Folding screen

A kink umbrella or knicker was a form of a light parasol for women that was widespread from around 1795 to 1860, which could be bent to the side and also offered protection from the low sun.

The Sunday Walk (Detail)

In the well-known picture of Carl Spitzweg's Sunday walk , the woman and the girl in the right group are each wearing a folding umbrella.

An umbrella whose handle can be folded up for space-saving storage and transport (e.g. in a carriage) is also known as a knicker. In France this type of umbrella was called a marquise (see awning ).

Today, larger umbrellas, the stem of which is vertically aligned by a stand or mounting, often still have a folding device. The direction of the shade can then be adjusted to the position of the sun by bending and rotating the stem. Such umbrellas for the beach and in the garden are also called folding umbrellas.
