Kokaral

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kokaral ( Green Island ) was an island in Kazakhstan , in the northern part of the Aral Sea , until 1973 . It had an area of 273 km² (1960) and its highest point was the 163 m high Daut. On the north side were the fishing villages of Kokaral, Avan and Akbasty.

When the Aral Sea dried up, it became a peninsula at the end of the 1960s by growing on the west bank. From 1987 the lake around the Kokaral area had dried up so badly that a land bridge was also formed on the east side and created an isthmus that divided the Aral into the North Aral Sea and the South Aral Sea .

In 2005 the Kokaral dam was rebuilt from concrete . It prevents the less salt water in the northern part from flowing away into the southern part and has thus contributed to an increase in the water level, a decrease in salinity and the recovery of fish stocks in the northern part.
