Kokinos kapnas ( Greek Κόκκινος Καπνάς ) was a Greek- language newspaper in Abkhazia that appeared from 1932 to 1939. It was aimed at the Greek minority in Abkhazia , which in 1939 made up over 11% of the population of Abkhazia.

history

The newspaper was founded in 1932 by Mikhail Kalaidopulo. The first issue appeared on June 17th of the same year. The newspaper appeared in Modern Greek , although articles were occasionally published in Pontic . However, the standard Greek spelling was not used, but a radically simplified, purely phonological spelling with 20 instead of the 24 letters of the Greek alphabet. It was one of the few Greek publications in the Soviet Union. In 1936, Kokinos kapnas was renamed Komunisti (Κομυνιστι). Georgi Bumburidi became editor-in-chief. In 1937 the circulation reached about 4,000 copies.

When the Soviet minority policy changed in 1939, the newspaper was discontinued.
