The Commission for Federal Statistics (BStatK) is a Swiss advisory body for the Federal Council , the Federal Statistical Office and the other federal statistics producers .

It includes high-ranking representatives from the cantons and municipalities, business, the social partners, science, the Swiss National Bank and the federal administration . The commission was constituted when its members were appointed by the Federal Council on November 10, 1993. Its legal basis is in the Federal Statistics Act of October 9, 1992 and the Ordinance of June 30, 1993 on the implementation of federal statistical surveys.

The Federal Statistics Commission reports to the Federal Department of Home Affairs . It is presided over by a representative of the scientific community and usually convened three times a year.

Tasks of the commission for federal statistics

The focus of the work of the Commission for Federal Statistics is on monitoring and reviewing the statistical multi-year program for federal statistics. This also includes the preparation of an annual report on the status and development of federal statistics for the attention of the Federal Council. Further tasks of the commission for federal statistics consist in the adoption of recommendations and guidelines drawn up by the FSO as well as in the assessment of projects with regard to the introduction, cancellation or modification of important statistics and with regard to important cross-sectoral projects.

Finally, the Commission for Federal Statistics is responsible for promoting cooperation and coordination between the official statistics producers and for assessing the diffusion policy in the field of statistical information. In general, the role of the Federal Statistics Commission is to ensure that official statistics meet the requirements of a democratic society and to help assess future needs for statistical information.

Multiannual statistical program

The Federal Statistical Office, in cooperation with the other federal statistical offices and after consulting interested parties, prepares a multi-year program (MJP) of statistical activities at federal level for each legislative period . The multi-year program is based on the Federal Statistics Act and serves a transparent and comprehensive planning of the federal statistics. It provides information on the important work of federal statistics, the respective financial and personnel expenditure of the federal government and the planned international cooperation. It also gives Parliament the opportunity to review the planned statistical work in relation to its political objectives and to express its opinion.
