Continental Shelf Limitation Commission

The Commission for the Limitation of the Continental Shelf (also Continental Shelf Commission ) is an organ of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea .

The commission works on the basis of Art. 76 (8) in conjunction with Annex II of the Convention on the Law of the Sea and has the task of making recommendations on the definition of the outer boundary of the continental shelf within the meaning of the Convention, where this is more than 200 nautical miles from land. It is based on the geographical and geological data obtained from the coastal states.

The Legal Affairs Division (Department of Maritime Affairs and Law of the Sea) of the UN Secretariat carries out his duties vis-à-vis the Commission on behalf of the Secretary-General of the United Nations . This includes, in particular, administrative support and its financing.

The commission meets twice a year.
