Mumbai High North Complex
The Mumbai High North complex is an amalgamation of four interconnected oil platforms in the northern part of the Mumbai High oil field , also known as Bombay High . It is located 160 km west of the Mumbai coast .
2005 accident
The facility was destroyed on July 27, 2005 when the supply ship Samundra Suraksha hit one of the platforms, causing it to catch fire. The starting point of the accident was that the injured ship's cook of the Samundra Suraksha was to be brought from the ship to the drilling platform in order to receive medical care. Since due to the monsoon , a helicopter transport was not possible, the man should be pulled up with a basket on the platform. Because the crane did not work on the leeward side , it was only possible to accept the man on the windward side. However, the ship, which was lifted by a wave, damaged a gas line, the escaping gas ignited and the fire quickly spread. Since few of the rescue facilities were available, many of the workers had to jump into the sea. Squalls and high waves made rescue operations difficult. The rescue helicopters on the mainland could not take off because of the storm. Aircraft dropped life jackets. 363 men were rescued within 16 hours. On the ship, six divers who had been left behind during the escape were rescued 36 hours later from the decompression chamber . 22 people were killed in the accident. The damaged oil island was lost and the ship sank four days later.
In the following years, the rebuilding of the plant began.
