The Congo Channel is a geological depression located below sea level , which is located in the continuation of the mouth of the African Congo River . The course of the Congo Channel can be traced for about 150 km.

The Congo Gully is the largest river channel in the world.

Emergence

There are two theories about its origin:

  • The channel was created by a tectonic rift valley (like the Rhine plain ).
  • The channel represents the former erosion valley of a river, which was pushed below sea level by a depression in the earth's crust.
  • The channel represents the erosion valley of an archetype of the Congo , which flowed into the Atlantic about 150 km to the west than is the case today. This means that the sea level was about 1000 m lower, the African plate had lowered by about 1000 m or a combination of both events was the case.
