Congress election in the Federated States of Micronesia 2017

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2016 congressional election in the Federated States of Micronesia took place on March 7, 2017.

Election result

The mid-term election in 2017 resulted in a similar composition of the 14-member Congress . Eight of the ten members whose two-year term ended were re-elected.

As there are no political parties in Micronesia, all candidates stand as independent candidates and campaigns tend to focus on local issues. National issues in 2017 included the constitutional referendum on dual citizenship, which took place in parallel with the general election, and the Compact of Free Association (COFA) with the United States of America, on which a parliamentary resolution was passed in December 2015. Since independence in 1986, Micronesia has been in free association with the US on the basis of the COFA, with the US funding the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) through an annual subsidy. In December 2015, a resolution was tabled in Congress that the end of the COFA should be decided in 2018. However, this resolution had not yet been adopted at the time of the 2017 elections.
