construction

Construction of the first canal began in 1836 and was completed in 1841. The canal had a lock made of wood, was 336 m long, 13.6 m wide and 2.15 m deep. The construction of the canal is to be seen in connection with the construction of the Taipale Canal , which is located south of the city of Varkaus and opened a year earlier, and the Saimaa Canal, which was completed in 1856 . The construction of these canals made possible extensive areas and cities inland such as B. the slightly north located city of Kuopio access to the Baltic Sea .

Soon after the Saimaa Canal was completed , it turned out that the Konnus Canal was becoming too small. The construction of a new canal began. The lock was built to the east of the old lock. It was put into operation in 1869.

The third canal was built in 1917-1919 by widening and rebuilding the original lock from 1841 for rafting.

The fourth canal was built in 1969–1971. It has a length of 160 m, a width of 13.3 m and a maximum depth of 4.8 m. The new construction was carried out in connection with the expansion of a deep water fairway from Savonlinna to Kuopio.
