Konrad II. (Münsterschwarzach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Konrad II was abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Münsterschwarzach . He appears as such, however, only in the abbots series by Heinrich Wagner and is referred to by other representations only as an intruder. The exact term of office of the abbot is not known, as Konrad II became prelate in the course of a dispute with Konrad I Zobel . It is possible that Konrad II was only abbot in 1317.

Münsterschwarzach before Konrad

Very few sources are available for the events that shook Münsterschwarzach Abbey in the 13th and early 14th centuries . These testimonies speak of no less than three major fires that destroyed the monastery in 1228, 1266 and 1282. It was only under Abbot Sifrid that it was rebuilt. He excused the abbey and began to buy back the lost rights.

Life

Abbot Konrad II was deliberately not included in the abbot series of the so-called "Chronicons". He was considered an "intrusus", an intruder who wanted to sneak power in the monastery in order to secure an annual pension. He influenced Abbot Konrad I. Zobel as chaplain and caused the prelates to go into debt. Later he even managed to force Abbot Konrad I to resign . However, when the latter returned, fired by the Convention, an open dispute broke out. Konrad II died on an unknown date.
