Counter battery

Counter batteries were gun emplacements that were used in a formal attack against a fortress to fight the lines of the fortress that could fire at the trench crossing and the breach .

The counter batteries were mainly used to attack the flanks of the bastioned front ( batterie pour contrebattre les flancs ). In Vauban's attack system, the counter batteries were placed on the glacis coronation .
