Counterpointing

The term counterpoint (also: counterpoint) is derived from musical counterpoint and, according to a frequently quoted suggestion by the musicologist Hansjörg Pauli (1976), describes a function of film music .

In counterpointing, the character of the music contrasts with the content of the picture, for example when calm piano music is played in a battle or war scene. Together, the musical character and the image content result in a new statement that is not contained in their original statements. This new perspective on the overall context is formed in the head of the viewer / listener - depending on their experiences and active participation in the filmic events.
