Converter (EDI)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the EDI area, a converter is software that converts data from an in-house application program into a standardized data format or vice versa.

Since there are various standardized data formats in EDI and the partners have to coordinate their data content precisely, each application program can output (export) the data in its own data structure . The converter then writes this data into the necessary segments and elements so that it understands the trading partner's system and, in turn, can import it back into the other company system.

The data interfaces can be pure ASCII interfaces, i.e. via file output , but also SQL interfaces in which the data is exported directly from or imported into a database . Technically, a so-called message mapping takes place.

It is also essential that the conversion runs automatically and does not have to be triggered manually. Only then is automated EDI operation possible. In general, this requires a system that, in addition to the original task of converting, also offers secure communication with market participants, market partner master data management, monitoring of the processes and error handling. Such software is also called an EDI system .
