A tonic - clonic seizure is a series of repetitive spasms in the body muscles , usually associated with loss of consciousness . It is triggered by synchronous discharges ( depolarizations ) of nerve cells in the brain .

In the past, the now outdated term “ convulsion ” was used (from Latin convellere “tear loose ”, “shake”).
