Coordination ellipse
A coordination ellipse is a syntax term.
Explanation
In a coordination ellipse, also called coordination reduction, there is a series of sentences, two main clauses are separated by a conjunctor, e.g. B. "and" connected.
Fritz baut ein Haus und Fritz pflanzt einen Baum. Fritz baut ein Haus und pflanzt einen Baum.
In both sentences the subject is realized by "Fritz". In the second example, the subject in the second part has not been realized, but saved, since the first main clause shows who the subject in the second main clause is.
In the Duden grammar there is the rule that it is legitimate to save similar parts of a sentence in a row. It is often stylistically inelegant if the parts are mentioned again that also appear in the other conjunct.
Classification of the omissions
The two most important types of coordination ellipse are gapping and link cancellation.
Gapping
When gapping , the finite verb and possibly other parts of the second conjunct are omitted.
Max soll die Katze füttern und Marie den Hund ausführen. Max soll die Katze füttern und Marie [soll] den Hund ausführen. Soll Max den Hund füttern und Moritz die Katze? Soll Max den Hund füttern und [soll] Moritz die Katze [füttern]? Max soll den Hund mit Schokolade gefüttert haben und Moritz mit Sahne. a) Max soll den Hund mit Schokolade gefüttert haben und Moritz [soll den Hund] mit Sahne [gefüttert haben]. b) Max soll den Hund mit Schokolade gefüttert haben und [Max soll] Moritz mit Sahne [gefüttert haben].
You can see here that there are two different ways of interpreting the third example.
Interestingly, the gapping does not require that the deleted finite verb has the same form as the one not deleted in the first conjunct.
Ich soll die Katze füttern und du den Hund. Ich soll die Katze füttern und du [sollst] den Hund [füttern].
Link repayment
With link repayment, also called right-peripheral elision (English: Right Node Raising), material is deleted from the right edge of the first conjunct.
Sie ist hin und er ist zurückgefahren. Sie ist hin[-gefahren] und er ist zurückgefahren. Max soll den Hund und Moritz die Katze füttern. Max soll den Hund [füttern] und Moritz [soll] die Katze füttern. Leon sucht und findet seinen Schlüssel. Leon sucht [seinen Schlüssel] und [Leon] findet seinen Schlüssel.
As you can see in the last examples, gapping and link cancellation can also be combined.
Whether the formal identity is necessary or not, as with gapping, also with the link cancellation is seen differently in the specialist literature.
Weil ich die Katze und du den Hund streicheln willst, … Weil ich die Katze streicheln [will] und du den Hund streicheln willst, …
Repudiation
There are sentences that look as if there is an equivalent to link repayment, namely "legal repayment", that is, repayment on the left margin of the second conjunct. The following sentence is an example of this:
Da einige die Sache nicht ernst nehmen und sich mit anderem beschäftigen, höre ich auf. Da einige die Sache nicht ernst nehmen und da einige sich mit anderem beschäftigen, höre ich auf.
The exact analysis shows, however, that these sentences are not congruent in terms of content: In the first sentence "some" means the same group of people in both conjuncts, in the second there is the possibility that different groups of people are involved.
Coordination ellipse with the same subject
A ranked sentence can be characterized by the fact that it has two sentences connected with "one subject". There is no problem in saving the second subject as it is the same group of words with the same word form, so the reference is clear. If the first main clause has an "inverse sentence structure", one speaks of a subject internal ellipse .
