Louie Spears

Louie Butler "Mbiko" Spears, Jr. (born March 9, 1935 in Oklahoma City ) is an American jazz bassist who was best known for his membership in the quintet of Billy Harper .

In the late 1960s, Spears played with Eddie Harris , with whom he made his first recordings ( Free Speech , 1969) and made a guest appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1970 . In the following years he worked with Bobby Hutcherson , John Carter , Kai Winding , Sathima Bea Benjamin , Horace Tapscott , Charles Owens and Dwight Dickerson . From 1979 he was a member of the Billy Harper Qunitett, with whom he also toured in Europe. He can be heard on Harper's albums The Awakening (1979), Live On Tour In The Far East, Vol. 2 (1991), Somalia (1993) and Blueprints of Jazz, Vol. 2 (2006). He also starred with Curtis Peagler , Mat Marucci , Roger Hamilton Spotts , Buster Cooper and Hugh Brodie in the 80s and 90s . In the field of jazz he was involved in 38 recording sessions from 1969 to 2008.
