Shafts III and I of the Budryk mine

history

On November 14, 1978, the Polish Mining Ministry gave permission to build a coal mine called Budryk in the Ornontowice municipality with the aim of being able to start mining in 1991. The name of the mine goes back to Witold Budryk , Rector of the Academy of Mining and Metallurgy in Cracow.

In October 1979 the sinking of "Shaft III" began, in November with that of Shafts I, II and VI. But after four years the planned start of production was postponed from 1991 to 1995 and in 1989 further work on expanding the mine was suspended. Two years later, work was resumed after several banks had secured the financing of the next steps.

After the colliery came into the sole ownership of the Polish Ministry of Finance in 1994, production was finally started in July 1995. The last change of ownership took place in 2008, this time to Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa SA (JSW).

The mine has an area of 35.97 km² and a reserve field (Ornontowice II) of 4.63 km². The daily net production amounts to approx. 11,600 t. It has four levels at 700 m, 900 m, 1050 m and 1290 m. The seams are between 1.65 m and 2.3 m thick and are very shallow at 4–6 gons. Five shafts belong to Budryk, one shaft with container conveying, two shafts for cable travel and material transport, and two weather shafts.

In 2015 “Shaft VI” of the mine in Chudów was sunk to a depth of 1,320 m, making the shaft the deepest in Poland.
