The Korean Service Medal is a military award of the US forces that at the direction of President Harry S. Truman was introduced on 8 November 1950 and the when was intended for soldiers, Korean War between June 27 1950 and July 27, 1954 were involved .

The award was given to members of the US armed forces who performed their service in the territories of the war and its territorial waters . In order to receive this award, a soldier had to serve at least 30 consecutive days or a total of at least 60 days in the prescribed area. The Department of Defense has declared 13 different operations where this award can be used. Multiple awards are marked with a service star.

The medal was only awarded until 1954, since 1961 the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and from 2004 the Korea Defense Service Medal is intended for missions in Korea.

The colors of the ribbon and the ribbon buckle indicate the reference to the United Nations .
