Christian Winther (musician)

Christian Winther is a Danish jazz musician ( saxophone , also clarinet ).

Christian Winther first learned the clarinet at the age of eleven and began to be interested in jazz through his father's record collection. After Louis Armstrong , Charlie Parker and John Coltrane were the first role models and prompted him to switch to the saxophone. He studied with Darryl Barber, then in New York at the Skidmore Jazz Institute, a. a. at Milt Hinton , at the University of New Orleans with Ellis Marsalis , Ed Petersen , Victor Goines , Steve Masakowski and Harold Battiste . During this time he worked a. a. also with Frank Morgan and Alvin Red Tyler . In 2001 his debut album Perspectives was released . Since the mid-2000s he worked a. a. at SteepleChase Records recording sessions with Marcus Printup , Vincent Gardner , Gregory Tardy and Wayne Escoffery . From 2003 to 2010 he participated in six recording sessions. Winther founded the duo Two People with the pianist Richard D. Johnson to perform the music of jazz composers. A first album was dedicated to Billy Strayhorn ( Two People: The Music of Billy Strayhorn ).
